Airlift Northwest (ALNW) - Seattle, WA - Safety Officer
The ALNW Safety Officer coordinates effective communications of all safety related issues between staff, management and our Aircraft vendors to ensure that ALNW is operating under the highest standards of safety in the air medical industry; maintain state air medical transport requirements for CAMTS; act as the liaison between ALNW and UW Medicine on safety related issues and all other staff to ensure good communications.
The Safety Officer will ensure that ALNW meets all national and regional safety standards specific to the air medical industry and participates in all efforts related to the national certification program (CAMTS) compliance in the area of safety. This will require the Safety Officer have an understanding of all job functions and locations within Airlift Northwest.
The Safety Officer may report concerns directly to the Executive Director, CFN or the Risk management Team at UW Medicine ensure the safety of the Airlift Northwest operation.
Models safety as a core value by demonstrating safe practices, proactive hazard identification, and risk mitigation, compliance with policies and procedures and training requirements. Assists with monitoring, documentation and follow-up of all Safety Committee meetings, safety concern processes, reported concerns, post-flight debriefings and morning briefings. Serves as member of Airlift Northwest Safety Committee. Serves on Airlift Northwest Quality Management committee as representative of Safety Committee. Assists with documentation of safety program to meet CAMTS accreditation requirements. Assists, at the direction of management, with compliance auditing of safety policies and procedures. Assists, at the direction of management, with the interface between vendors’ safety management systems and Airlift Northwest Safety Program. Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual summaries of safety activities, concerns and debriefings for reporting to staff, management and Board of Trustees. Monitors for trends and makes recommendations in patient safety events in conjunction with Educators, Medical Director and Chief Flight Nurse (CFN). Maintains and distributes Safety policies and procedures, Emergency Response Plans, Post Accident-Incident Response Plan, and MSDS information. Assists management with the development and implementation of a comprehensive Safety Management System for Airlift Northwest. Ensures the scheduling and completion of safety training activities involving clinical staff, communications staff and business staff. Informs management of discrepancies. Coordinates with EMS and hospital personnel to provide safety information and training for helipads and landing zones. Maintains documentation of annual internal and external safety training. Authors and distributes regular safety updates and related information. Ensures that air medical crew members have, use, and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment and that aircraft are stocked with specified survival equipment. Ensures personnel comply with state and federal rules and regulations with regard to safety including applicable OSHA and WISHA regulations. Assists management with safety budget planning. Participate in the interview process and recommend selection of staff. May serve as an ad hoc member to any Airlift Northwest committees. Serves as the ALNW representative to the UWM quality and safety coordination Committee and Employee Health and Safety Committee; Monitors for trends within ALNW for employee health and safety and makes recommendation in conjunction with the CFN. Coordinates risk management activities and is the point of contact for UWM/ Health Sciences Risk Management and leadership team.
- Minimum education required is bachelor’s degree (i.e. BA or BSN) plus five years of air medical experience.
- If previous experience in health care, current WA state license AND five years of professional nursing experience, or Current WA state license/registered as Paramedic with a minimum of 5 years’ experience.
- If previous experience in aviation, must possess current pilots license.
- If non-clinical- must have experience in air medical transport business.
- Formal training and/or experience in Safety Management preferred.
