Medical Communications Specialist

We are seeking a Medical Communications Specialist to:

  • Triage incoming calls for urgent and emergent patient transfers from the Access Center for interfacility flights. Log time and nature of each call.
  • Triage incoming calls and direct radio requests for scene flights from the regional 911 center, county sheriff departments, or emergency response agencies including police and fire departments and EMS units.
  • Collect available patient medical information from referring facilities for all patients being transported to University Hospital and American Family Children’s Hospital. Relay this information to the Emergency Department, Admissions Office, and/or the receiving unit.
  • Continuously monitor telephones, UHF, VHF, and Unicom radios, emergency alert scanner, and the intrahospital encrypted radio in effort to be made aware of scene flights as early as possible.
  • Establish appropriate radio and landline communications with requesting agencies to secure landing zone instructions. Relay initial patient medical report to the flight crew.

Education:

Minimum - High School Diploma or GED

Preferred - Associates Degree or higher

Work Experience:

Minimum - Two (2) years of experience in an emergency services role such as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Technician, or comparable role

Preferred - Experience in professional communication or EMT certification or above

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of flight following procedures and map reading including: understanding of latitudes and longitudes, Quadro Chart Plotter Interface and software, distance measuring equipment, variable omni range, and global positioning system
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of south-central Wisconsin ambulance and fire protocols regarding mutual aid policies and radio communications
  • Ability to manage a high volume of incoming calls and triage patients appropriately
  • Ability to function calmly, use reasonable judgment, and communicate effectively in stressful or crisis situations
  • Competence in problem resolution

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary: Ability to lift up to 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one, which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

Work Schedule: 75% FTE, 28 hours per week. Position will work 12 hour shifts including an every other weekend rotation. Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.
